Brett Inch: I started teaching in 1996 and always harbored a love for making and, sometimes, breaking things. I had the opportunity to attend a 4 day blacksmithing course in the hope of introducing it to my school at the time and developing my skills in this ‘grandfather trade’. The course involved making tongs, punches, top and bottom fullers and a drift so that we could then go on to make a hammer.

After finally setting up my own home forge I’ve been pursuing blacksmithing as a hobby for 7 or 8 years now and I continue to love the challenge. I especially enjoy teaching others the skills and techniques involved in shaping and manipulating the steel in the forge.

I have a particular interest in metal sculpture and enjoy creating shapes and structures that people don’t always associate with steel.

Once you’ve learnt and practised the basic skills you can achieve an incredible amount with just some simple tools and some sweat.

Brett can be seen in blue in the video as part of a Striking Team,
making a hammer on a striking anvil.

Students will be required to wear cotton workclothes, closed in leather shoes, and bring their own hearing and eye protection.

Lunch will be provided on all days.
